A free tutor centre will be hosted at Docklands every Saturday from 12-3pm. Atamai tutors help school-aged children with areas of education they need support with.
We’re delighted to announce that a new organisation offering one-to-one tuition will be joining Docklands to host their growing weekly tutor centre. This fantastic initiative supports children marginalised by “an education system that recreates social and racial hierarchies”. The Atamai Tutor Centre will be running free tutoring sessions on Saturdays from 12-3pm from 5th February 2022, offering catch-up and homework support for both primary and secondary school students.
"Our services seek to support young people who are marginalised by an education system that recreates social and racial hierarchies."

Tackling Inequalities in Education
Atamai is a volunteer-run tutoring centre set up as a response to inequalities in education, which were amplified by the pandemic.
The three organisers of the centre, Lau Batty, Hribhu Mendiratta and Nalini Mistry, first met at a panel discussion following Bristol’s BLM march in June 2020. They collectively wanted to do something practical that could help reduce school exclusions, which disproportionately affect black students.
Since its initial inception the centre has grown by training new volunteer tutors and securing ongoing funding for this much needed resource. The centre has witnessed significant successes with students growing in confidence and improving their academic achievement, through tailored educational support.
A Culturally Sensitive Approach
Atamai’s approach is culturally sensitive, with a team led by people of colour who understand the experiences of the students they seek to support.
The organisation is a social enterprise collaboration between educators, activists and youth workers who are keen to make a lasting difference in the lives of local young people.
All volunteers are DBS checked and have a background in education or youth work. Many of them are teachers themselves, who volunteer on a Saturday after working all week in schools.
Providing Laptops and Internet Access
Atamai’s services are primarily aimed at children and young people who do not have access to laptops and internet at home, but extends to those that are struggling in the traditional education system and will benefit from one-to-one support.
Parents are welcome to get in touch and also have the option to drop in to the space to chat about their children's needs.
